Pujols = Monster

The best player in the game today is Albert Pujols. This guy is a monster ! He is such a good hitter, anything close will go for a ride. You hope he pops up or doesnt hit it out of the park ! Soon alot of these teams are gonna start to smarten up and walk Pujols everytime. Like teams did for Bonds when he was out of control. Last night , Pujols hit his 13th HR of the year. This is tops for homeruns in all of both leagues. Amazing ! In his first few years in the league, Pujols has quickly become the top hitter in baseball. I dont think that going to change anytime soon either !

Steve Howe Car Accident

The AP has reported tonight that Steve Howe , former MLB pitcher has died in a car accident. Howe is remembered as the guy with a drug problem back in the 80s. He was given many chances over the years including a few by the Yankees. He will allways be known as the guy who couldnt kick his habits. The Yankees have allways been good over the years giving guys 2nd chances. Doc Gooden and Strawberry come to mind right away. Condolences go out to the Howe family. He was 48.

9-14 For A Reason

The Mariners are quoted recently as saying they are better than there 9-14 record. There reason being that they have faced alot of good pitchers allready. This is true but everyone is facing good pitching. I have a few reasons why the Mariners are not doing that well and will probably fight all year for 500. Some will say its a competitive division and a tough AL. If You ask me , guys like Everett,Sexson,Beltre,Reed and Guardado need to look in the mirror. A little more pitching wouldnt hurt too much either.

3 More To Catch The Babe

He did it again. Barry sat out todays day game against the Mets. Only to pinch hit in the 9th. And Boom... He hits one off Met closer Billy Wagner. The Mets did come back to win the game. This is #711 for Bonds. He needs 3 more to tie the Bambino. Who knows, maybee Bonds can distance himself from the Babe too..

Smiles in Cincinnati

One of the hottest teams in baseball right now is the Reds. The Reds are led by there newest pitcher Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo , now 4-0 , came over from the Red Sox in a trade, early on this season. Its tough to find decent pitching these days but it looks like the Reds finally got on the winning end of a trade. Maybee if they can keep it up until Griffey jr. gets back , they might make a run at the playoffs. Id look for the Reds to stay close to 500 this year and play spoiler at the end. Even that would be a big improvement to the regular celar dwellers , the Reds.

4 To Go

Last night Barry Bonds hit his 710th HR. He has 4 more to go to get to Ruth. He's gonna do it too ! However after watching last nights game , I realize this is it for Bonds. He wont get to Aaron. He hit that homer last night and started to run around the bases like allways. Going from 3rd to home was a struggle for Bonds last night. He was stumbling into home the same way Vito from the Sopranos walks. Kinda 'gimpy'.. I was suprised he went back out into the field after that too. Some will say that its an act to get better pitches to hit. Many surgeries , including at least 2 on his knee alone last year, have really taken there toll. The best steroids in the world cant cure old age. Barry Bonds will go down in history as one of the greatest players to play the game ever - period.

This Day In Baseball

On this day  April 25th, back in 1995,  MLB returned after a 257 day layoff/strike. The players had gone on strike the previous year.

On this day in 2001 , sure 'Hall of Famer' Rickey Henderson was walked for the 2,063 rd time in his long career. This set the all time MLB walk record. One that may never be broken again.

Rain in NY ???

Im amazed they got the games in this weekend in NY. Both saturday and sunday were soggy wet days. Sunday morning it was raining so hard you couldnt see. I got soaked going from my car to get a morning paper. By the last few innings , there was bright sun seen in the outfield of Yankee stadium. Goes to show I'll never be a weatherman , and Mr Steinbrenner doesnt like to rain out a weekend game. Over in the bronx , it doesnt matter who's in town , the game is allways packed. The Yankees may draw 4 mil this year in a city with two teams. Gotta love NY.

Bonds Goes Deep #709 (5 to go)

Barry hit his first homer of the year tonight in Colorodo. Right over the left field fence. Some will say its Colorodo, but look for Barry to get his swing back as the weather warms up. He's no spring chicken anymore but you gotta figure Ruth will be #3 by the end of the year. I think this will be the last year for Barry and he will go out as #2 behind Aaron.

Burnett On The DL

Every year there are many injuries. Seems like this year is no exception. The Blue Jay's newest pitcher , AJ Burnett, who just signed for over $50 mil. has gone on the DL. His elbow is injured - the same one that was repaired a few years back. Tough break for the Jay's who are trying to make a stand in the big money AL East.

Lee Goes Down , Gramps Does It Once More.....

Last night Cubs MVP Derrek Lee broke a few bones in his wrist and will be out for at least 2 months. Lee was run into by the Dodgers Rafael Furcal trying to make it to first. This is a huge blow for the Cubs who allready have other injuries to key players (K.Wood and more) . With the NL a little down from the last few years, maybee the Cubs can hang on to 500 until the all star break.

In other news, late last night in San Diego, Julio Franco hit a pinch hit home run. If you didnt know, Franco is 47 years old. I said it right , 47 ! He became the oldest player in the history of the game to hit a homer. Mr Franco says he wants to play until he's 50. One look at Mr Franco and you can see the shape he is in physicaly. He's probably going to do it too.

Honorable mention.... Kaz Matsui, in his return to the Mets, hit a homer in his first at bat. Not just a homer, an inside the park home run. Kaz has hit a homer in his first at bat of the year , 3 years in a row. Honestly, Kaz shows a flash than burns out quick. The only thing that has kept him in NY is his huge salary the Mets fork over to him. Bringing Kaz to NY has turned out to be a big mistake. Probably a big #2 for the Mets behind the Zambrano mess...

Victor Victor

Victor Martinez is the best catcher in the game. Probably one of the best players period. This guy could be better than Piazza if he keeps it up. Allready riding a 15 game hitting streak , it seems like Victor hits a homer every night. The Cleveland manager has allready said Victor will play a little first base this year. Gotta keep that bat in the lineup and theres no room at DH with slugger Travis Hafner there. Hafner doesnt really have a position except DH. If the pitching can hold up , the Indians might just make a nice run to the playoffs this season.

Is K - Rod ok ???

I was watching the Twins-Angels game last night and saw K Rod come in for the ninth. Now Im on the east coast so alot of the west coast games start late for me. LAst night the game was in Minnesota. So Im was all ready to see Rodriguez come in to close it down with a quick save. Instead it was a long , painfull showing. Giving up walks including walking in a run to tie the game up. I couldnt help thinking while watching that KRod doesnt seem the same as in the past. Maybee its just early season bugs, trying to get in a groove after not having a full year last season. Maybee he just had a bad night.. Whatever the case may be, the Angels are going nowhere without Rodriguez coming out in the ninth. Guys like Shields and Donnelly can fill in for a while but its a long year.. AS of today Frankie Rodriguez has an ERA of 6.75 with 4 saves. But only 6 strikeouts !

Zambrano ????

Its time for the Mets to move on from there long time ,long term project , Victor Zambrano. Its nothing personal , he's just an average pitcher at best. If they can bring up rookie Brian Banister to start , why not another young kid ? Honestly it cant be much worse than Zambrano and tonight was no different. In just 5 innings, Zambrano gave up 7 runs including 3 homeruns. Two of those bombs came from all star Andruw Jones. Its been 2 years since the Kazmir / Zambrano trade. We all know it was a mistake. A bad trade. But do we still have to watch him continue to loose games and bring an up and coming team back down to earth ? The Mets are not going anywhere with Victor Zambrano on the staff.

The AL Looks Tough

Now that two weeks of the season have passed we are starting to see a few teams distinquish themselfs quickly. The AL in general is a much improved league. I dont think we will see a 100 win team in the AL this year. Theres many well built teams and actually some parody this year. Should be fun to see them fight it out this year for the 4 playoff spots. In the AL , the Red Sox have gone straight to the top. The name of there game is pitching. Schilling and Beckett are both 3-0 with era's well under 2. I cant remember the last time Boston had 2 20-game winners. Let not forget there pen either. No its not 'Enter Sandman' being played in the 9th but it looks like the Sox have a top young closer now. Originaly set to be a starter , Jonathan Papelbon moved to the pen to fill often injured (to be nice) Keith Foulke. Turns out Papelbon , allready with 4 saves , is quite good in the 9th. Sorry mr Foulke, your the setup guy now. In the NL , the big story is the Mets. A solid team with some good veteran players , mixed in with up and coming young stars. None bigger than David Wright. This guy, in really his 2nd full year, is allready leading the league in hitting. Ive even heard early chants of 'MVP MVP' from the fans at Shea. Still, the Mets are about 3 players away from being a top team. They still need another big starter (maybee Dontrell down the road) , another solid bullpen guy (lefty) , and maybee a big bat off the bench. What a great move hiring Willie Randolph for manager. Omar Minaya is one of the best GM's in baseball today.

Lets Move On

A federal grand jury is now investigating and considering if Barry Bonds lied in his testimony about the BALCO case. Seems like this is just a little backlash to the book 'Game of Shadows' that has recently come out. The book basically spells out Bonds past steroid use. We know Canseco was right in his book so we must figure this book must be somewhat close to the truth. As for the grand jury, well they dont like when someone lies. Thats a big crime that even president Clinton had trouble with. All in all , we should just let this steroid stuff go. Except the policy MLB has and move on. The only way Bonds will get convicted by a grand jury is if Conte or Anderson goes up there and talks about Bonds directly. Conte wont do that and he's allready said he had no contact with Bonds. Anderson probably wont roll over either. He has been a longtime friend of Bonds and employed by Bonds for years... Can we move on and enjoy the game ......

No Beanballs - Just A Win

In a follow up to yesterdays Pedro vs Guillen , the Mets went on to win a 'beanball - less ' game 3-1. Of course this is the best way to do it. Win on the field above all. And those Mets are doing just that ! The hottest team in the league with only 1 loss so far this season. The Mets are led by there young third baseman David Wright. This guy is one of the best players in all of baseball in just his second full year. And dont look now but after a few 'boo birds' were heard on opening day , Carlos Beltran has heated up at the plate. Maybee he has adjusted to New York. More likely , with a better cast of players around him in the order , Beltran is starting the relax and see a few pitches. The Mets are going to have a big year !

Pedro vs. Guillen

Last week in New York, Pedro Martinez hit his 'friend' Jose Guillen twice. Thats enough to get any hitter upset. Lets not forget that Guillan allways gets hits of off Pedro. Now, Pedro has pitched inside for years and will continue to do so. However after last week, tonights matchup in DC will keep everyone on the edge of the bench. Guillan has allready said he's ready to fight if he gets hit by a pitch. We all know Pedro is going to pitch inside. My guess is Pedro , being the thinker he is, will probably hit someone else other than Guillan. He likes to make the umps think that maybee he is off his game. Pedro has pin point control , even on a bad day. Never forget that ! Whatever happens , it should be another good game for the up and coming Mets. With a good mix of young tallented players and skilled veterans , it looks like the magic is back at Shea again.

Chipper goes down

Atlanta Braves all star Larry 'Chipper' Jones went on the 15 day DL today. I guess he sprained his right knee and ankle. This guy gets a few weeks off due to injuries every season. He will be back in a few weeks. Im sure he will heal up just in time to beat up on the Mets again later this year.

Where's Mariano ???

Its been a week into the season now and there has been no sign of the top closer in the game - Mariano Rivera. There have been rumors he was spotted in Florida enjoying an extra week of sun before joining the team back in NY for the home opener. Ive even heard a rumor that Mariano had retired and the Yankees were afraid to announce it.. Truth be told , the Yankees are 1-5 and havent had the need for a closer. This could be a year the Yanks either win 20-1 or loose to a pitcher with his good stuff that day. However this could be a good thing if Mariano is well rested for the playoffs down the road... Dont worry , the leagues best closer will be out there sooner or later....

The Brew Crew

The Milwaukee Brewer's are the hottest team in baseball right now. Five wins in a row to open the season. There best in almost 20 years. Well , its been against the Pirates and Diamondbacks so lets not go crazy yet. Still , its nice to see the Brew Crew having a little fun again out there in Wisconsin..

Rollins Streak Over

Last night in a 4-2 loss to the Cards , Jimmy Rollins went 0-4 to end his 38 game hitting streak. This was one of the longest runs at perhaps the toughest record to catch - Joe D's 56 game streak. 38 is one of the best runs we have seen in years , however similar to the 'Tiger Slam' it was over 2 seasons. Regardless , props to Rollins on a fine season last year and what looks to be one this year too. Jimmy Rollins is one of the best up and coming players in the league.

Bonds Doesnt Need A Syringe

In the first game of the year in San Diego , a plastic syringe was thrown at Bonds. I know he's going to get alot harassment on the road this year but this was a little over the top. Even Jesse Jackson has called for MLB to protect its players. He's right too. You cant throw things at the guy or anyone for that matter. Its going to be an odd year for baseball with Bonds breaking records but there is not much you can do. Dont cheer for him , dont cheer for the Giants (thats easy). Baseball has a policy now for steroids. I personaly can let it go and move forward. If they had steriods in the 60's everyone would have done them. Lets move on and enjoy the game.
